Industrial PC: Built for Harsh Environments
Industrial PCs (from manufacturers like Advantech, Beckhoff, Siemens) are designed for -20°C to +70°C operation, 24/7 reliability, DIN-rail mounting, and 5–10 year parts availability. They have fanless designs (no moving parts to fail), solid-state storage, and extended support lifecycles. Cost: ₹40,000–2,00,000 depending on specifications.
Raspberry Pi: Impressive Cost-Performance Ratio
A Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) costs ₹6,000–7,500 and matches or exceeds the compute performance of many industrial PCs at 5–10% of the price. In air-conditioned control rooms or MES server rooms, Raspberry Pi reliability is excellent. We have Raspberry Pi gateways running continuously for 3+ years in Indian factories.
When to Choose Industrial PC
Temperature extremes (>45°C ambient without air conditioning), high vibration environments (pressing, forging, stamping machines nearby), applications requiring >5-year uninterrupted operation without access for maintenance, safety-critical applications where failure has serious consequences, and projects requiring formal hardware qualification documentation.
When Raspberry Pi Is the Right Answer
Air-conditioned control rooms or server rooms, cost-sensitive deployments with many edge points, rapid prototyping and pilot projects (switch to industrial PC after validation), applications where replacement within 2–3 years is acceptable, and projects where development speed and community support outweigh long-term hardware concerns.
Start with Raspberry Pi for cost and speed. Upgrade to industrial PC for production-critical applications in harsh environments. Many factories use both — Raspberry Pi for monitoring, industrial PC for control.
