Non-Conformance Management: record, investigate, and dispose of defective products. These four modules cover 90% of what most manufacturers actually need from a QMS.

What You Probably Don’t Need Yet

Risk management software (use Excel until you have a dedicated quality team). Customer complaint management (a simple ticket system is fine for most SMEs). Supplier qualification management (until you have >50 active suppliers). Training management (HR software handles this).

Build vs Buy for Indian Context

Western QMS platforms (Veeva, MasterControl, ETQ) are designed for FDA-regulated multinationals. Annual licence: ₹15–50L. Validation cost: ₹20–50L. These are overkill for Indian SMEs. A custom QMS for an Indian MSME manufacturer costs ₹5–15L to build and includes exactly the modules you need without the ones you don’t.

Integration with Your ERP and MES

A QMS in isolation creates duplicate data entry. Non-conformances should automatically link to batch records in your MES. CAPAs should automatically notify relevant personnel via your ERP workflow. The QMS should read material and supplier data from ERP, not maintain its own database.
